5 pro tips for beautiful skin
1. Choose an exfoliant to suit your skin type
The number one rule for healthy skin is to treat it according to its type. Exfoliation is a key part of any skincare routine. “Regular exfoliation (2 to 3 times a week) is essential to maintain a healthy, functional skin barrier,” she says. Chemical exfoliants, particularly alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), such as glycolic acid, are great for combination skin. For those that are oily or congested, physical exfoliants should be avoided. Instead, try a gentle chemical exfoliant, such as beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), and in particular salicylic acid, as they penetrate deep into the dermis to remove all impurities. They are also antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.
Polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) are the gentlest chemical exfoliants as they don’t penetrate deeply into the skin like AHAs or BHAs and are subsequently less irritating – they’re great for those with sensitive skin. Look out for PHA ingredients, like gluconolactone and lactobionic acid, which also have moisturising and anti-inflammatory properties. For dry skin, use the gentlest chemical exfoliants once or twice a week, to avoid stripping the skin. “I recommend a lactic acid-based product as it is antimicrobial and one of the gentlest forms of AHA.”
