Microdermabrasion is one of my favourite in-studio treatments. Think of it as a superpowered form of physical exfoliation, in which a delicate buffing tool manually resurfaces the skin to deeply cleanse the pores and remove any dead skin cells, oil and debris trapped within them. By gently sloughing away dead layers, we’re able to reveal fresh, new ones beneath, resulting in a brighter, more radiant complexion.
There are a few different forms of microdermabrasion: in my studios we use ultra-fine diamond microdermabrasion. This type of microdermabrasion utilises a small wand with a laser-cut diamond tip to polish the skin, improving texture and tone and encouraging cell turnover. The wand has a vacuum suction that allows the device to maintain contact with the skin collecting the exfoliated skin as it goes. Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive treatment, meaning that it’s pain-free and without any downtime. It feels like a mini suction cap being gently raised and lowered from the surface of the skin. The intensity of buffing and results will depend on the type and grade of the machine. Unlike other types of microdermabrasion, diamond microdermabrasion does not generate any heat and is very gentle, making it appropriate for most skin types. But anyone with open pustules, prone to rosacea or spider veins, has thin and fragile skin or is post-menopausal should avoid microdermabrasion.
After cleansing the skin, the device is gently swept across the face, going over several times in sections with deeper spots of congestion and build-up. It is then followed by the application of any masks or serums. The microdermabrasion thoroughly exfoliates the skin, creating a perfectly clarified base for active ingredients to penetrate deep below the skin’s surface. Microdermabrasion treatments yield incredible results from a single treatment and its benefits extend beyond the salon by boosting the absorption potential of your at-home regime.
Like most treatments regular maintenance will see the best results, ensuring a smooth, brighter more refined complexion. While at-home microdermabrasion devices do exist, unfortunately, these cannot compete with the precision of in-salon devices and should be left to a professional.
