Notes on LED light therapy

For a dewy, radiant, lit-from-within glow, LED light therapy should be on the top of your skincare to-do list. I’ve been using this technology for years both on my clients and myself due to its ability to elevate, illuminate and rejuvenate any complexion with zero discomfort or downtime.

Light Emitting Diode (LED) Phototherapy is a non-invasive treatment that targets specific non-thermal light to energise cells which triggers a cascade of bio-stimulatory responses. In other words, it’s a one stop shop to glowy skin.

This efficacious treatment has been proven to repair and rejuvenate the skin of a wide range of concerns including acne, pigmentation, ageing, redness and irritation, rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis as well as healing wounds and scarring. It’s an incredibly well-rounded treatment, and for those without specific skin concerns LED can boost the overall hydration and radiance of the skin.

Well evidenced for its regenerative and healing benefits, phototherapy does not transfer heat or create trauma, making it particularly effective to treat problematic and inflammatory conditions.  With one of the highest safety profiles, it’s my go-to for promoting a healthy, strong and radiant complexion.

LED light therapy is a singular treatment often used in conjunction with other in-salon modalities and treatments such as customised peels and resurfacing treatments, antioxidant serums, hydration boosters and brightening masks to maximise the treatment results. After just one treatment, the skin is radiant and refreshed and when used regularly over the course of many individual treatments it can yield incredible results.

The experience itself is relaxing and painless. In fact, many clients actually fall asleep throughout the session. During the treatment, your therapist will place the LED light machine over your face usually for around 10 or 20 minutes. It’s also proven to boost serotonin levels, creating a feeling of well-being and a sense of calm.

There are three types of LED treatments: red, white and blue light. Each light penetrates the complexion at a different frequency allowing for a variety of different ways to target and treat specific skin concerns.

Red Light

Red 633nm light increases cell energy to accelerate repair and renewal, boost collagen synthesis, increase hydration and enhance circulation to reverse damage. Red light is ideal for restoring vitality and glow.

White Light

Near-infrared 830nm targets deeper cells to trigger the wound healing process, calm redness and irritation, reduce pigmentation and promote healthy skin. I like to combine with Red 633nm for advanced rejuvenation benefits.

Blue Light

Blue 415nm light works to destroy bacteria that cause acne and improve skin clarity whilst also soothing and reducing redness and inflammation in the skin.

A great way to maintain your skin in-between appointments is to incorporate an at-home LED mask. Whilst at-home versions are not as powerful as their professional counterparts they are an incredible tool that yield true results with consistent use.
